When is Desert Triathlon?

The 2022 Desert Triathlon will be on Sunday, February 27.

Desert Triathlon has traditionally taken place the first weekend in March. Why has the date changed?

This is strictly a permitting issue. Currently, Riverside County Parks is not permitting events at Lake Cahuilla past the end of February. Therefore, the event will take place one week earlier than usual.

Where does Desert Triathlon take place?

Desert Triathlon takes place at Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area, 58075 Jefferson Street, La Quinta, CA 92253.

What are the different events and what are the distances?

  • Sprint Triathlon – 500 meter swim, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
  • Sprint Duathlon – 1 mile run, 14 mile bike, 3.1 mile run
  • Olympic Triathlon – 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike, 10 kilometer run
  • Olympic Aquabike – 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike

Will the swim take place in Lake Cahuilla as usual?

Yes. We will be permitted to utilize the lake for the swim.

What time do the races start?

The first Olympic distance wave will start at 7:30am, and the first sprint distance wave will start at 8:30am.

Where can I find the wave start list?

The wave start list will be released closer to race day. Check our website frequently, or like our Facebook page for updates.

Is Desert Triathlon USAT sanctioned?

Yes!

Is there a time limit on any of the events?

No!

How do I sign up for Desert Triathlon?

Easy…Click HERE. You can also register at pre-race registration and packet pickup, or on race day at Lake Cahuilla Recreation Area. See below.

If I sign up for the race, and I cannot participate, can I get a refund or transfer my registration to someone else?

Desert Triathlon has a no refunds policy. We do allow transfers between you and another person up to 15 days before the event. Click HERE to read our refund and transfer policies.

If I cannot participate, can I defer my entry to next year?

While you cannot defer your entry to next year, you can cancel your entry by logging in to your TriSignUp account up to 7 days before the event. Once you cancel your registration, you will receive a code for 50% off of your registration fees for next year’s event.

My relay partner will not be able to participate. Can I replace them?

Yes. Please have the partner who will not be able to participate contact us at info@southland-events.com. If possible, please have them provide us with the email address of the person who will be replacing them.

How can I make changes to my registration (t-shirt size, name misspelling, etc.)?

How many aid stations are on course?

There is one water station on the bike for the Olympic distance ONLY. There will be three water stations on the run course. Sprint distance athletes will pass the water stations a total of three times, and Olympic distance athletes will pass the water stations a total of six times.

Is there any nutrition on course?

Yes. Gels will be available at one water station on the run course.

Can I wear headphones?

No. USAT rules state that “Headphones, headsets, walkmans, ipods, mp3 players, or personal audio devices, etc. are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race.”

When and where is packet pickup?

Packet pickup will take place at a location TBD on Saturday, February 26 from 11am to 4pm, and Sunday, February 27 at Lake Cahuilla from 5:30am until race start.

Can I register in person?

Yes, you can register at packet pickup.

Can a friend or family member pick up my race packet?

No. USAT rules state that you must pick up your own race packet. You will be required to show ID when you do so. Relay team members can pick up their packets as a group, or individually, but each member will be required to show ID as well. The only exception will be parents and guardians picking up packets for minors.
